Final Draft
VANCOUVER – The most watched television event in Canadian history with 16.6 million people (nearly half the country) watching the entire game and over 26.5 (80%) watching at least some of the broadcast. Also tuning in were over 27.6 million Americans, making it the most watched hockey game since the 1980 gold medal game. The gold medal men’s hockey game of the Vancouver Winter Olympics is about to begin, the goalies bat their sticks across the posts and the referee slides to center-ice. If Canada wins this game they will be the first team to win a gold medal in men’s hockey since the Lake Placid games in 1980. Also riding on this game is the world record for gold medals won in a single winter Olympics by one country. Canada delivered. With an epic gold medal game ending with a 3-2 win over the USA which had defeated Canada the previous Sunday 5-3. A ticket to this game from a scalper out front would cost at least $1,500, not much of a discount.
This game looked good for Canada from the beginning. The Canadians dominated in the offensive zone from the first puck drop. Generating chances seemed to be Canada’s strong suit this game and they took a lead 7 minutes and 10 seconds into the first period. The crowd erupted with excitement when Jonathan Toews snapped a rebound straight into the back of the net. The first period ended with Canada up 1-0, things look good. This is the first time in the entire tournament that the USA has been trailing.
As the second period starts the USA is still fighting, but nothing seems to be going their way but 5 minutes and 20 seconds into the second the USA gets a power play, things are looking up. The USA begins to generate chances, Canada starts to sweat with only a 1 goal lead, but Pronger clears the puck leaving the power play with less than 30 seconds left. No conversion. Less than 30 seconds after the power play by the USA Canada scores again, the puck falling right into the slot, Corey Perry blasts the puck past miller and Canada goes up 2-0. The crowd goes insane, the team goes insane, and the game looks all but over. But team USA isn’t giving up yet, nearly 13 minutes into the period the USA’s own Kessler scored the USA’s first goal shrinking the lead Canada had to 1 goal. The period ends leaving Canada in the lead by 1 again. 2-1.
The third period starts and the tension is terrifying. Just 50 seconds into the period Weber hits the post, Miller had no idea where it was. Just under a minute after that Pronger hits the post, two chances for team Canada that just didn’t work. In the first few minutes Canada is dominating, seemingly fueled by the USA’s goal in the 2nd. Miller makes a game-saving save after Perry shoots on net off a chip shot. Mike Babcock, the coach of Team Canada seems to be keeping Crosby’s line out with Niedermayer and Weber, relying on them quite strongly. The clock ticks down to just under a minute. USA pulls Miller in a desperate last push for a goal. After winning two consecutive offensive zone face-offs they get their chance, Patrick Kane, of the Chicago Blackhawks blasts a shot that goes off of Langenbrunner and drops in front of Roberto Luongo and with 24.4 seconds left Zach Parise stuffs the puck in the net. Silence falls over the entire nation of Canada, what seemed like a sure win a few seconds ago has been challenged. The USA ties it a 2 apiece. Overtime.
The puck drops. The crowd remains silent, fearing the worst but hoping for the best. Canada goes back and forth with the USA neither team getting a shot off. The 4 on 4 hockey has opened the ice to the teams giving Canada the advantage with their star-studded lineup. Before heading to the locker room after the third period Jonathan Toews said "One of us has to be a star." After about 7 and a half minutes of 4 on 4 Iginla shoves the puck to Crosby, who out stepped Brian Rafalski and headed towards the net; catching the pass, Crosby hurls the puck between Miller’s legs. The goal light goes on. The entire country bursts with excitement. Crosby, stunned by his achievement looks at the light and throws off his gloves and helmet and celebrates with the rest of his team. The Golden Goal came at 7:40 into the 4 on 4 overtime. Final score is 3-2. Canada is indeed the first team to win gold on home soil and does reach its goal to set a world record with 14 gold medals at one winter games. Take a bow Canada, you deserve it.
